Fat Dog To The Big Apple : Week 57 Somewhere To Cape Arago

One of the advantages of my exercise in consolidation is that it gives me the opportunity to revisit some of my more neglected blogs and attempt to bring them up to date. One such blog is "Fat Dog To The Big Apple". For those unfamiliar with this ridiculous project, let me give you a bit of background. I started the blog three years ago as an exercise in virtual reality, an experiment to see how accurately you could visit places using nothing but the power of the internet and the wonders of resources such as Google Earth. The idea was that I would take my dog Amy on a walk from Los Angeles to New York. We would actually do the walking, but it would be on the wet and grey streets of West Yorkshire. Each week we would transfer the miles walked to our virtual trans-continental walk from the Pacific to the Atlantic. We would use the full resources of the web to explore the places we passed through and report on the project via weekly "postcards" to the blog. Since last November we have been going nowhere, so it is time to restart. If I go ahead with my Grand Blog Consolidation plans I will send the weekly post to this blog in future : but until I make a final decision I will post to both blogs.

What an interesting lighthouse. I like all the driftwood laying around it. I think your quest with Amy sounds fun. Keep us posted on your trek.

  5. LadyCat, Brian, Bach and Liza : Where it will go eventually is New York but it is a long, long process. It has taken me almost three years to get from Los Angeles to where I am at the moment. Equally, I am not going "as the crow flies" but via a number of places I have always wanted to see. I am also more and more tempted to virtually call in on all my blogging friends on the way.

  9. Alan, I think if you ever make to the Big Apple you will find fish 'n chips served up in newspaper. Not sure if they will be as good as over there but maybe close! :)

I have a thing for lighthouses...this one is beautiful!

  10. Ha! Two Loons Cafe - that was a good one! I have to agree with Amy; it must be the cranberries that have taken over the cheese industry. You don't see much cheese at American Thanksgivings, but cranberries? Woowee!

Glad to see you're back on your walks. I always enjoy your treks.

  11. Betsy : They don't allow us to serve them in newspaper over here any more - some health and safety thing about printing ink. I always thought that the smell of the steaming newspaper-wrapped parcel was almost as good as the fish and chips themselves.

  12. What a delightful idea! Be sure to swing through the Rocky Mountains, it's gorgeous. And maybe see Graceland in Memphis, as well as the riverboats.

  13. Fat Dog was actually a very clever idea.

  14. The weather is beginning to break here in central Ohio, so I am going to begin my walk to West Yorkshire. Virtually speaking, of course.

It'll be fun to see where you and Amy wander.

  15. Wild Celtic : I will certainly be crossing the Rockies and I will try and factor in Memphis as well. Thanks to everyone for all their suggestions.
Willow : I will send you the co-ordinates for Google Earth.
