No Spade Is Turned

This picture is from my bedroom window this morning. The predominant scene of grey and white is broken only by the bright orange of a snow shovel. But this is a spade unturned, as I shiver indoors nursing a dripping, running, sniffling cold. I tell the Good Lady Wife, that ,at my time of life, this combination of illness and inclement weather could easily carry me off, and she tells me not to be such a wimp and to start shoveling the snow. I tell her that there is no point as further heavy snow is forecast, and she gives me the kind of look that could, in itself, freeze the North Sea. I sneeze and cough. She turns over and goes back to sleep. And still no spade is turned.

Latest Update : 11.00am It's getting worse. Just about to take Amy out for a walk. I might be quite some time.

  1. We, soft southerners are about to get some of the white stuff later today. By-the-way, is that a left handed or right handed shovel?

Keep warm and bathe in the glow of the GLW's affections.

  2. I note from the bins that while you have a green bin (presumably for cardboard - or could it be garden waste?), there is no bucket for recyclable plastic.

Can I assume from the positioning of the wheels in the car furthest from your vantage point, that it was the last car to be parked in the drive?

  4. Well, if you lost your creative vomit, you might as well do some snow-shoveling.

  5. A happy December to you, Alan! A beautiful, if chilly, view which greeted you. We are under a deluge of rain, with winds that howl as loud as any blizzard. Stay warm, stay dry, and take care of that cold!

  7. Well, I guess December 1 is as good a day as any for snow. I envy you the snow, though; we're getting pouring rain and a flood warning for the Susquehanna River. Not my idea of Winter weather!

  8. If nothing else, it is a lovely picture!!

  9. Ah, good to see a glimpse of your native habitat. We had our first blizzard last week, earlier than usual by like 6 weeks. Hard to believe the icecaps are melting. Anyway, time to stock up on hot-buttered-rum mix and kindling!

  10. The Farmers Almanac said that we were going to have the worst winter in ten years. I do hope they are wrong. Winter is not my favorite time of year.

Offering up a prayer for your speedy recovery but also hoping that by then the snow will be gone and that your spade will remain unturned.

  11. In this case, there is a striking similarity between your local scene & mine. Oh well, good cheer!

  12. I woke up this morning to gentle snowflakes, but no accumulation. I want some of your loveliness!!

  13. Looks familiar! In my view it's not worth shovelling - it only starts again as soon as your back is turned. Stay in, enjoy being cosy.

  14. Extreme exertion in the presence of a viraemia is highly dangerous! You should be medicating yourself with single malt, a good novel and adequate rest.
I presume you have a large life insurance which is why you were exhorted to take up the spade and dig....

  15. We had quite a lot of sunshine today, but all below zero degrees, so the snow stayed. This afternoon, we spent a couple of hours building a snowman. As a finishing touch, we added a deep purple hat. Now, it is white!

Our temperature dipped twenty degrees, into the sixties with some rain...

It will grow colder in January. Take care.

  20. Please don't sounds sooo much like Captain Scott there, dear man! Have you returned yet? how is the cold? --both the one inside and outside!

  21. All looks so romantic as things area wet and warm in the antipodes. Look after yourself. Hot Toddies all round. Perfect for man-flu! Perhaps that's why they call a spade a fuckin' shovel.

  22. Oh no, snow and a cold (man flu?) and a GLW who doesn't understand ;-)
Do hope you improve quickly ...and your weather too, although living somewhere where it never snows it looks gorgeous to me!

  23. I have been following your plight with the white on national news. I was feeling badly for you and then when I heard there was a cold involved I really feel badly for you. Sometimes it is best to just put the person down when they have a cold as it makes you not feel like living for much longer. Take care my friend. Drink lots of hot everything and sleep the spade can wait.
