All Hail The Lord Evicted

I am occasionally tempted to have a theme with a title something like "Britain Is A Very Peculiar Place". Take this sign planted in the garden of the office park down the road. Before the offices were built, the field was occasionally used by Travellers. Maybe it is not surprising that the landlord doesn't want the Travellers returning to spoil his businesslike facility. Maybe it is not surprising that he is prepared to retain a national firm of bailiffs to evict any unwelcome visitors. But you would think that, given the authoritative and legalistic nature of the sign, they would have threatened trespassers with Lord Halsbury rather than some unknown Hailsbury. I am tempted to nip back with a pot of paint and correct it, but they would probably evict me.

  1. You should try it anyway. I would.

  2. Too funny, it really needs to be correct, after all so many people today are now possibly learning this history...and you want it repeated correctly...don't they? Hopefully someone isn't being funny with real history... and are playing with the name (and their past-power) by using the meaning of the word hail?

  3. They're just being caravanist!

Perhaps I should report them to the campaign for plain English.

  4. It's funny when you see signs like this where the writer seems to see one's self as so in the right.

  5. Not a very friendly bunch are they? With a sign like that whatever business they I are in must not have a public relations department:)

  6. Sounds as though they don't know their Hals from their elbow!

  7. After read that sign I doubt I would want to do business in that establishment, Fear mongering is not the way to attract clients.
But I love that you are amused by the spelling error.
Why not send them a post card pointing out their mistake and wait?
Then use the outcome in a future post.

  8. Maybe Halsbury preferred to use baliffs.

  9. Yes Britain is a very strange place....

  10. Take a thick red permanent pen and 'mark' the error! A firm diagonal line over the offending word, accompanied by a 'Sp' for spelling, should do the trick!

  12. I'm off to buy a caravan to test this out.

  13. Paranoia is alive and well! It's a shame you can't get garden gnomes with little caravans to leave there. I've tried googling such things but, to my surprise, nobody seems to make them.

  14. A fat red marker should do to point out their mistake, but they'd probably be more concerned with the defacing of their signage.

  15. Sounds like the majority wants you to get that fat red marker and correct it! We must all be harboring some kind of resentment from our graded papers in school! lol....

  16. Your posts are becoming quite tardy. Is that due to your pub-crawling activities? I recommend 2 booze-free days a week. Any day without a Y in it.

  17. Oo-er. I can't think of anything else to say about this sign, Alan. So many mixed thoughts. Snobs! Weird! Effective perhaps ? ARE there any caravans parked there?

Gave me a good laugh, too, so thank you!
