Left Hand Down A Bit

Another of the photographs from my recent holiday. We were just leaving Gibraltar Harbour and, as far as I could make out, the entire ship was been steered from the bridge by a guy with a Sony Playstation controller. Whatever he used, it worked well and there were no Costa Concordia moments during the entire cruise.

  1. Ah, technology! Now we can control a huge ship with a little hand-held controller. Maybe a youth spent playing video games isn't a total waste after all.

  2. Nice little systems - they're called portable piloting & docking systems. Used to sell them.

  5. A playstation controller? Were we meant to see that? Perhaps we're all part of his computer game and don't know it...

  6. A long way from the old tea clippers with their double-double helms, four wheels in all, and still a job for the strong and fit!

  7. All the same, I wouldn't want his job.

  8. Well I am glad he was at the controls even if it was a joy stick for a steering device. That is a great shot of the ship.

  11. It is amazing how those huge ships can be manoeuvred by a button.

  12. It's fascinating to watch those huge floating hotels being maneuvered into tiny spaces. I would love to spend a day or two on a pilot ship.
