Sepia Saturday 239 : Proverbially Posted By The Resident Monkey

Every cloud has a silver lining. The other week I was late putting the Sepia Saturday call up - better late than never is what I say - and, as beggars can't be choosers, I decided not to look a gift horse in the mouth, so I chose a postcard from my vintage postcard collection as the prompt image. I have heard it said that a picture paints a thousand words, but my prompt picture had a few words attached in the form of a proverb. I know that fools rush in where angels fear to tread, but fortune favours the brave and therefore I decided to kill two birds with one stone and use another proverb postcard for my own Sepia Saturday submission.

The proverb in question - "first be just, then be generous" - is one I have never heard of and, if Google is anything to go by, neither has anyone else. However, fish always stink from the head down whereas half a loaf is better than none. But as Amy said to me just this morning, if you lie down with dogs you get up with fleas, but, said I, it is easy to be wise after the event. Put it all down to the chap who puts the calls up - if he hadn't forgotten to put the call up on time there would have been a proper sepia call this week and you might have got a proper post from me. But as they say - if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Escape from all this rubbish and see what sensible bloggers have posted for Sepia Saturday this week by visiting the Sepia Saturday Blog

  1. I LOVE these, Al, and I laughed and laughed over what you wrote. Would you consider linking these up to my Postcard Friendship Friday, too? Lots of folks who link up to various things, often link to two different "events." I enjoyed these so much, I would love to see this on PFF. (grin) Have a lovely weekend, my Friend!

  2. I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, so I'll give credit where credit is due: Job well done, Sir!

  3. You are a hoot...and there were at least 3 "sayings" which I'd never heard of before!

  4. Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today! Bravo for a post well done. If you want something done right you have to do it yourself. Good show!

  5. A very pretty postcard but why can’t the chap ‘just be generous’? It doesn’t matter that you were a bit late with the prompt as ‘good things come to those who wait’

  7. I discovered a set of these postcards. The others have more recognisable proverbs such as "One good turn, deserves another"; "To err is human, to forgive divine"; "Strike while the iron is hot".

  8. Perhaps this was a printer error. "Just be first, then s/he will be generous"
As for peanuts, elephants like them too.

  10. Just bring me flowers and I'll be generous, I say.

  11. Well, we can't all gnaw on a single bone and you know the herring does not fry here.

  12. I love proverbs, but I don't think I have any proverb postcards. I think it would be a fun topic to collect.

  14. Ha Ha Ha. Loved it. Clever. Very Well done!

I heard a new one today. We all know "The early bird catches the worm" but did you know that "the second mouse gets the cheese".

  15. I'm trying to imagine what it would be like to be in a house where people talk in proverbs all the time. I think it would make a good comedy sketch.

  16. To meet an old friend in a far country is like the delight of rain after a long drought. Bless you my Sepian friend for sending some Yorkshire rain our way. It rained here last night & this morning's temperatures are down in the 60s. It's wonderful & still cloudy! If every day was a sunny day, who would not wish for rain.

  17. Very entertaining, and 'better late than never' also applies to the timing of my comment here.

This is one of the weeks when my carefully worded comment of a few days ago doesn't seem to have reached its destination. But it wasn't as clever as your pot pourri of proverbs. Very entertaining.
