Heading For Cold Storage

I have made a start on giving News From Nowhere a bit of a Spring Clean and  you will see that there is a new Header. Some new elements will appear on the Sidebar over the coming days as well. I have decided that trying to keep two blogs going and finish the novel by next June is a trifle over-ambitious, so I have decided to put Alan Burnett's Picture Post on ice for the time being and concentrate my blogging energies on News From Nowhere. The series of scans of old negatives will not cease, however, but will merely be incorporated into the NfN schedule. The picture used in the new Header is one such scan of a picture I took some 30 or 40 years ago in either Cleethorpes or Skegness, I forget which. And here is another photograph from the same day out.

  1. These old photos are treasures. What do you intend doing with them other than posting them here?

    1. I am thinking of using 12 of them for my 2013 Calendar. I will let people know if the plan comes to fruition.

  2. Very nice Alan, and your blog is a pleasure to read. I took a photo like that (in colour) about 5 years ago at Cleethorpes, which does seem to have wonderful expanses of muddy sand at certain times of day.

  3. I look forward to seeing the scans of negatives here and will have to go take a peek at Alan Burnett's Picture Post as that is one I've missed.

  4. Excellent, Alan. The future of my own blogging activities is under consideration just now. I love your new header. It captures perfectly, the essence of News from Nowhere. Imagine, if someone told you 40 years ago, 'hey, that shot might look good at the top of your blog, someday!' Funny old world, isn't it?

  5. Oh Alan, if you do make a calendar for yourself for 2013, might you make some copies for your followers? It would make a great addition to my new place, I am moving from the waterfront place into Newcastle/Miramichi in a couple of weeks...

  6. Great shots! And I'm looking forward to the calendar. Which reminds me that I have to update mine on Lulu.com to 2013.

  7. The new banner photo is great, Alan, but the second photo is pure journalistic art.

  8. I so know what you mean about spring cleaning, or rather over this soon to be long cold winter we must brave! :) a clean swipe of my blog is something I've been trying to muster up myself. But, it seems life keeps pushing in the center of a royal clean-up especially with blogger being so hard to navigate and when I try to post a new photo, it's either too large, or then when I purposely make it smaller-it's not square enough! Imagine that!

  9. I don't know how a photo can be both timeless and yet redolent of a certain age - but these are. I know what you mean about blogs and spring-cleaning. I sometimes feel that mine is 'a beast that has to be fed' and think I'll stop or radically amend my approach - but then I seem to get a second wind and carry on the same!

  12. That header is a real winner, Alan! Could almost be somewhere really exotic, like Thailand. It also reminds me of some of those great movie posters from the 50s and 60s. Both photos are absolutely captivating.

I love change, and will look forward to what you have on offer in the coming times.

  13. Was that picture taken after the Torrey Canyon disaster?

  14. Who would have thought that technology as we knew it then would have required you to print that photo out with all the chemicals included. The new scanner does such a wonderful job of bring back history. It is a great thing for us to as we get to enjoy them.
