Stone Marinated In Sweat

Walking along the canal towpath in Huddersfield this morning I glanced up at the mill that still casts a shadow over the Sainsbury's Superstore. What an awe-inspiring structure - the stone progeny of industry and trade with ceilings and walls marinated in the sweat and blood of generations of workers.

  1. I keep having battles with Hay about the cause of countless terraces we see in the countryside. She says they are natural, but I've never seen something less natural in my life and firmly believe they are the result of stone excavation for stone buildings and the dry stone walls that abound here and in the Yorkshire Dales.
