Bank Holiday Bluebells

It's Spring and the sun is shining. Monday was a public holiday (or Bank Holiday) here in the UK (as was the previous Friday, as was the previous Monday, as was the previous Friday - who says we don't know how to enjoy ourselves). A perfect day for a walk in Shibden Park, Halifax. When I grew up, I lived a mile or so away from the park and it formed part of the playground of my youth. It looks much grander these days and in a strange reversal of what is normal, it feels much larger than it used to do. The beautiful Elizabethan Shibden Hall (home of the notorious Anne Lister) is the main feature of the park, but there are also glorious woodland walks and a fine ornamental boating lake.

The bluebells were at their height, the scenery was breathtaking, and on that sunny day you could not have wanted to be anywhere else in the world.

  1. That is a lovely park! We don't remember what sunshine is over here in Ohio! And I may need to borrow one of those canoes if the rain doesn't stop! We have some new rain-made lakes in our yard! :)

Looks like you've done some spring redecorating over here! Nice!

  2. Ah! Boats in the water are definitely the way to my heart! Like the Rat in The Wind in the Willows, I'm convinced there's nothing better in life that messing about in boats. And I wouldn't mind living in Shibden Hall, either. Thanks for the walk, Alan.

  3. I had to smile when reading "in a strange reversal of what is normal, it feels much larger than it used to do." So often, I'll obtain some toy or other object which I'd originally owned in my childhood, and think, "Hm. I remember it as being much bigger when I was eight."

  4. Lovely pictures, such a calming post. It makes me more determined, now that spring is here, to get out for more walks in the woods.

I'm sure Amy likes to go there and bark
    Or maybe sniff a tree
Then squat and have a pee..LOL

  7. Ah looks gorgeous, I remember bluebells well, pretty little things. Sunny here too but we've cranked the heaters up, the nights are getting chilly.

Nice new header you've got, too.

  10. Fifty years ago, master boat builder Eric Fleming (his workshop was on the side of the canal at Copley) made a fleet of beautiful mahogany clinker rowing boats for the lake. Alas, these days it's fiberglass!

  12. This is definitely a blog that people need to get behind. The problem is, no one wants to do a great deal of reading and not have something else to stimulate the mind. This is the internet, after all. Maybe if you added a video or two to emphasise your point. Ill stick around, FOR SURE. But, I dont know if others will.
