Sepia Saturday 40 : A Pub Quiz Question

An old photograph. It looks like a wedding photograph. It looks like the 1940s. But who are they? I certainly don't recognise any of the faces, but the evidence suggests that they belong to the Good Lady Wife's family and not to mine. The evidence is a brief note written on the folder which contains the photograph. The Auntie Edie in question was Isobel's mother and the David Cuthill is Isobel's cousin. Whilst the idea that the two-year old David Cuthill actually wrote the dedication would be to stretch credulity a little too far, he could perhaps throw light on who the people might be. Tonight I will find out. Tonight is the pub quiz and by a happy chance, the very same David Cuthill (now a few years older) will be asking the questions. Following the usual 50 questions of the quiz I will pose him a question. Who on earth are the people in this photograph? I will report back with any answer I manage to get.

  1. People were so well dressed back then. It wasn't so much about designer clothes it was more about looking crisp and put together with nice accessories like gloves and hats and leather belts. Love it.

    Alan,
You are Mr. Interviewer! I love old pictures. I recently watched on Public Broadcasting a program on Daniel Burnham, an architect who built the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. There were some great photos on the program. They dressed to the occasion whereas now we simply go for comfort; sometimes not too appealing to the eye, I must say. :) The Bach

  3. Heh, heh! Turning the tables on the pub quiz master of ceremonies, eh, Alan? Hopefully David will be able to recognize some of these people.

  4. Enjoy the pub quiz! I hope you get the answer. I'm off to the pub shortly but not for anything more intellectual than to have a pint or two and discuss next weekend's mountain bike ride with the boys ... actually maybe 'boys' is stretching the collective noun a little.

  5. I love pub quizzes! Hope David is a source of much fascinating info on the family. Though even if he was at the wedding, aged 2, it'd be a miracle if he had a memory of it at all.

  7. The ladies hats are similar to those of my aunts' era. The 40's for sure.

  8. Yes the hats are like the wedding photos of my dad's sisters. I don't know anything about the quiz, I will be back to see what unfolds.

  17. Oh the fella looks on the verge of being giddy with excitement. Any moment he's going to break into a broad smile and laugh. Great fun!

  18. I agree with California Girl. There's something about the way people dressed up and looked so clean and well cared for. It made the guys look handsome and the ladies look pretty even if they weren't particularly.

  19. The standard of education in the 40s was obviously much better than today.

  20. It's all in the details. We're so casual now that all those wonderful accessories and little details which made then "presentable" seem stuffy and old-fashioned to us. I personally think they're charming and quite proper! Great photo!

I think I said I wish I could go to the pub and what"s a pub quiz? Is it trivia questions?
Well, maybe my comment wasn't very interesting after all.
