Picture Post 1024 : Bradford In Balance

No, this isn't a picture of the aftermath of the recent riots. One might say, however, that it is the results of mindless and wanton destruction. For over seven years, Bradford has has a large hole on one side of the city centre where shops and offices were demolished to make may for a shopping mall that was never built. As I walked through Bradford the other day, I noticed that the City Authorities had decided to bring a little balance back to the city - by pulling down the buildings on the other side of the city centre. That glorious domed cinema you can see will be the next to fall victim to the wrecking crews. A reminder that not all yobs wear hoodies.

  1. It is a shame about that cinema...why doesn't the city just make the first section into a green area?

  4. You have to wonder sometimes. Probably a 'jobsworth' who made the decision(s).

  5. Absolutely right! It is a shame such a lovely spot (my first thought was as you wrote about the riots) wasted minds for sure, doing pointless things...but you have also brought forth in this photo..."What an amazing sky, the clouds are perfect...if only we as a people could be as lovely as the sky! Great post to bring things full circle.

  6. Oh what a shame. You must feel that you should be out there with your camera, recording it before it all disappears.

  7. How can they get away with that? Here the domed building would definitely be a heritage protected place even if they just kept the facade. It's a travesty I tell you

  8. Why do I suddenly hear Joni Mitchell singing?

"Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.
    Pave paradise
And put up a parking lot."

  9. Which is the glorious domed cinema? The red brick building more to the center or the tan brick building in the back left corner? Which is the oldest and would one of them have been there in the 1850s when my ancestors lived there?

  10. Well, 'yob' is a new word to me but in the context, I can tell exactly what it means! :) Now that is very sad as those domes are gorgeous!

I guess you will want to place a twitter icon to your website. Just bookmarked this site, but I must do this by hand. Just my 2 cents.

  12. Sadly for Bradford, town planning equates to paving and planters. Over the last fifty years they have torn down many glorious buildings.

  13. I Hope They Know What They Are Doing In Bradford (but I doubt it!)
