Thematic Photograph 168 - Metallica

I have been meaning to join in with Carmi's Thematic Photograph meme for ages : and at long last I have shaken myself into action. The shaking has been accompanied by miscellaneous bangs, clanks and screeches - the sound of metal against metal - as the theme for this week is "Metallica". The photograph I am using is one I took way back in the 1960s and it shows a scrap metal yard and railway line in Halifax, West Yorkshire. It is not exactly the swinging sixties : but the rusty-grey tone seems to sum up the north of England in those days far better than any psychedelic Carnaby Street scene.
To see how others interpret the theme go over to the Written.Inc Blog

  1. Talking of rusty grey tones, I think you should do a blog on current European affairs of the financial kind.

  2. I love photographs of old rusty metal stuff and this is a great one. The old car tells the story. Metallica, indeed.:)Perhaps its a "song" about the working class.

  3. Great picture, makes you wonder what all that metal did when it was doing more than just sitting around rusting.

  5. Brilliant, Alan. You've caught the mood perfectly of all those scrapyards that bordered on our railway lines. I always remember one we passed (if I could only remember where) with scrapped and crushed cars piled on top of one another - they only needed a push to be on the lines.
Your railway adds perspective to the shot.

  8. Somehow those yards make me feel a bit depressed. It’s a great picture Alan, as usual, but I wonder what mood you were in!

  10. This reminds me of our metal pile that we are collection down at the farm. One hundred years of farm things. I guess I need to take a photo and share.

  11. There's a strange, fragile beauty to decaying rusty metal.

  15. Evocative photo...So, how would you sum up present day northern England?

I think Chairman Bill has a great idea.

  17. Just look at that car! Cars of today may be quieter, more economical, more reliable, warmer, faster and more comfortable, but they don't have character like that any more!

  23. I love the railway lines right in the middle. This reminds me of a photo I took of a whole mass of mufflers in a car repair shop back yard in Victoria BC

  24. Haha, swinging sixties! And rather annoying to think that many of the vehicles being smashed up would now be lovingly collected and restored. A very nice and atmospheric picture, too.
