My Contribution To Cultural Heritage

"Minding Baby" is the title of this early colour postcard. It was published by the Glasgow firm of Millar and Lang during the first few years of the twentieth century. It was a time when colour photographs were produced by hand-tinting black and white images, and this gave rise to all sorts of strange shades and colour combinations. As far as I can tell, this particular image has never been scanned before, and therefore I am proud to make it available to the world via the Internet, free of charge and copyright free. Think of it as my contribution to our shared cultural heritage.

  1. And given the time period, there's an even chance the child in the picture is a boy.

  2. It's a lovely tender moment, a child and their dog, precious!

  3. When I look at this I see a tremendous amount of detail...part of doghouse missing, chicken coop in background. Now in the days of photo shop how much of the detail would be lost. We might have more color but what would we be missing? Just a thought.

  4. Sorry to disappoint you, but I think the Irish Wolfhound Club of Switzerland (who else) has beaten you to it.

  6. I love this, so evocative. (And one of these days I'm going to learn how to create just that kind of effect in Photoshop.)

  7. This is so amusing. I'd write more, but I'm off to the Irish Wolfhound Club of Switzerland. Can't be late to those meetings...

  8. happy new year alan!! one of my new year resolutions is to reconnect with the bloggyhood! have missed my time making the rounds but the last half of 2012 was absolutely crazy, don't expect things to be less crazy, but i am hoping to develop some method where achieve a little balance.

love this photo. looks like an irish wolfhound a dog i always enjoy visiting with when i spend time with the dogs at our annual cleveland irish festival. however my favorite dogs they feature are those sweet, sweet soft wheaten terriers, i do hope one day one of those sweet dogs will wander into my home!! as long as it likes other dogs, cats and mice!

  9. It is an interesting card. I am assuming it was a hand tinted one. That is a big dog for a little girl.
