Work

Halifax, back in the 1960s. I suspect the building in the foreground is the Albion Mills factory of John Mackintosh & Sons. My father used to work there. The building to the right of the photograph is the Riding Hall Carpets Mill. I used to work there. Between are a fine collection of gas works and cooling towers. All gone, now, of course. Replaced by discount stores and car parks. Few people work there.

  2. An interesting historical photo but many questions about the changes that have taken place. Key point "No one works here anymore."

  3. Oh goodness -- do i remember the gas works. Not the one in Halifax, but somewhere around north east London. It just reminds me of city life and the war. Not happy memories. That's why I love Yorkshire. Flamborough rescued me from all that.

  8. I might be hopelessly disorientated, but aren't those tower blocks in the far distance - the ones that still stand near the middle of town?

Last time I was there I discovered they'd built something big on the Broad St car park (I think it's called that). A shame, as I have fond memories of car boot sales being held there.

  9. A belated slight correction: the building in the foreground was part of the John Mackintosh complex, but as I remember, it was part of "G" Mill, not Albion Mills.

    Happy New Year Ali.
